The Sacred Journey of Umrah

Take a look at Umrah guide Video

Umrah, is a non-mandatory yet highly recommended act of worship in Islam that can be performed at any time of the year. It involves visiting the Holy Mosque in Makkah and completing specific rituals, offering profound spiritual purification and immense rewards.

Step-by-Step Guide to Performing Umrah

Here are the essential steps for completing your Umrah pilgrimage:

1. Intention and Ihram (Sacred State)

  • Intention (Niyyah): Make the sincere intention to perform Umrah solely for the sake of Allah.
  • Ihram: Enter the state of Ihram by purifying yourself and wearing the specific Ihram garments at or before crossing the designated boundary points (Miqat). While in this state, certain actions (like cutting hair or nails, using perfumes, or covering the head for men) are forbidden.

2. Tawaf (Circumambulation of the Kaaba)

  • Proceed to the Holy Kaaba in Al-Masjid Al-Haram (The Grand Mosque).
  • Begin the Tawaf by facing the Kaaba at the corner where the Black Stone (Al-Hajar al-Aswad) is located.
  • Circumambulate the Kaaba seven times in an anti-clockwise direction, keeping the Kaaba on your left.
  • It is recommended to touch or point towards the Black Stone at the start of each circuit.
  • After completing the seven rounds, offer two Rak'ah (units of prayer) behind the Station of Ibrahim (Maqam Ibrahim), if possible.

3. Sa'i (Running Between Safa and Marwah)

  • Proceed to the hills of Safa and Marwah.
  • Start the ritual on the hill of Safa, facing the Kaaba, and reciting prayers.
  • Walk briskly (or run lightly for men) between Safa and Marwah.
  • Walk from Safa to Marwah is considered one lap, and the return trip from Marwah to Safa is the second lap.
  • Complete seven laps in total, concluding the ritual at Marwah.

4. Halq or Taqsir (Shaving or Trimming the Hair)

  • The final act that concludes the Umrah rituals and exits you from the state of Ihram is shortening your hair.
  • Halq (shaving the head completely) is recommended for men.
  • Taqsīr (trimming a portion of the hair) is permissible for both men and women.
  • Upon completing this step, all restrictions of Ihram are lifted, and your Umrah is complete.
